HP have dropped the black and white scan option and now only offer grayscale or colour options. This is clearly to ensure users use more ink but causes users issues. Corrections in tippex for instance now stand out like a sore thumbnail on a grayscal gray background print even on white paper scans. On the former black and white scans correction were not carred into the scan file as an obvious white beacon. 

 

A clear case of HP thinking profits, they love ink use and sales, over usability of their product. Restore black and white scan option!

I've solved the issue by downloading a third party freeware scan programme that has the full complement of options; b&w, grayscale and colour scan. the software works well with the all in one HP printer.
