I haven't found anything that works. Someone suggested swapping the chips from an OEM HP cartridge but I didn't see where they said how.
I kept my non-HP cartridges (that are half full) just in case. I had to suck it up and buy HP cartridges b/c I had to print.
Thanks to all for the posts and conversation - even if we don't end up with a viable solution. 😉

If the reset did not help, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance where the execution of terminal commands is required to resolve this issue.
You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.

I have a possible solution. Let us try to downgrade the printer firmware. I have sent you a private message with a set of instructions to perform a reset. Kindly check the same, this might help you to resolve this issue. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.
Let me know how this goes.

Hi,
I am also a victim of the "supply-problem" firmware. I do have a MFP M181. I now swapped one third-party cartridge with an original HP-cartridge... still the problem persist. Also the HP-cartridge is not recognized by the printer... Do I have to swap all 4 colors before this happens or is it bricked?
Any help appreciated!

Hp needs to push out an update that fixes this. Posting multiple different things to try to resolve the issues wastes our time and makes us more frustrated with HP. Your website clearly states that the use of HP toner is optional and not required. To force this update on us and force us to use HP products at significantly higher cost on machines that we used for years is anti-trust.

HP will probably make me take this link down but I did manage to find a copy of the previous firmware. The default settings on my printer were already set to allow me to downgrade my firmware so all I had to do is execute the program, answer a few questions and it reverted the firmware back to the 20200612 version. To confirm that your printer is set to allow downgrades, do the following on the screen.
- Touch the Home icon
- Scroll to and select Setup
- Scroll to and select Service
- Scroll to and select LaserJet Update
- Select Manage Updates
- Select Allow Downgrade
- Select Yes
While you are there, you may also want to turn off Check Automatically to prevent the problem in the future.
The link for the 20200612 driver is https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RFJrwj-WSjlRknxjfWHyNUvVqBqe8JdA/view?usp=sharing
I use Norton 360 which scanned the driver and said it was safe. I always encourage everyone to use adequate protection.
Let's see if HP wants to let their customers help each other or if they would prefer to face a class action lawsuit.
