I am quite frustrated, having the latest driver from HP and the latest (Maverick) OSX from Apple, but not being able to simply scan and save images into my computer. Does anyone have ANY information on how I can do this? I can scan and see the image on my desktop. But, I don't have a tab from HP to save it and I don't have a menu item from Apple to import it. I see back in October, there were lots of questions about this. Has it been resolved? Thanks for any help!

Hi oilartsy,
HP has created a document specific to scan output issues from HP Scan. It is suggested that you use Apple Preview, Image Capture or the System Preferences to scan. I have located the document to review. Unexpected Scan Output Using HP Scan Application in OS X v10.9.
If you have not been able to save the scan, this may not be the issue you are experiencing. To save the scan from HP Scan try clicking on File, to the left of HP Scan at the top next tot he Apple icon, and select Save.
If you have any issue saving, the document above does not provide steps to scan from System Preferences, you may want to try scanning with Apples Print and Scan Window, follow the steps below.
- Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
- Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences
- Click Print & Scan .
- Click your printer in the left pane.
- Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
- Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to change scan settings.Figure 1: Example of the Show Details scanning screen
- Change any scan settings as necessary, and then click ScanI hope this is helpful.

I'm still really struggling with this function. I click Scan and see a message saying 'Done scanning the selected areas' and nothing happens. It doesn't appear on my desktop where I've asked it to save to. I can't find it by searching. Where is it?

Hi Barefoot_Boho,
I would like to help you be able to scan and locate your scans. What printer do you have? How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
While I wait to hear back form you, please complete the steps below. This may resolve the issue with no further action required;
Reset Printing System
- Click the Apple icon (
), and then click System Preferences.
- In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan dialog box opens.
- Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
- Click OKto confirm the reset.
- Type the correct Name and Password.
- Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
- On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
- Double-clickDisk Utility.
- Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
- Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.Open System Prefrences again, Print & Fax/Scan, and click the little plus symbol. When you add the printer, please ensure you are using the HP driver, not the AirPrint driver.
- Select Add other Printer or Scanner
- Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' you can the printer driver
- Select Add other Printer or Scanner
Click the Apple icon, and check for Apple Software Updates. After the updates complete, or if there are no updates, please restart the computer and the printer.
After both devices are on again, please try scanning.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue or if you require further assistance.

Not once have you been helpful in answering how to save the doc. We know how to scan it. Read the entire question. No you do not get a thumbs up for telling us what we already know and ignoring the real question! HOW DO YOU SAVE THE DOCUMENT AFTER YOU SCAN IT??????

As this is your first post, I will require more information from you in order to help. Please let me know what version of Mac you have, as well as what program you are using to scan. Also, please let me know what happens when you scan, does the image/doc disappear, or does it not scan at all?
With this information I will be able to assist you more efficiently.

For those having trouble figuring out how to save scans from the HP scan utility on a Mac.. Here is the answer.
Once you have scanned your documents and wish to save them, click the "send" icon in the lower right hand corner of the appliaction. This will bring up a pop-up asking if you wish to send the document to a folder or a printer. If you select folder, you're stuck. It asks for the "prefix." Select printer instead. This will bring up your normal print window. Now, look in the lower left hand side of that window for the dropdown box. It probably says "PDF" as a defaut. Click the arrow next to that for the drop-down menu and select "Save as PDF." This will open an dialog window asking what you'd like to name the document. Type in the name and click "Save" in the lower right hand corner.
Your document will then be saved in the location you specified.
It only took me an HOUR to figure this out - THANKS HP! WAY TO MAKE THE PROCESS EASY! (I'm being sarcastic, of course - this was anything but easy)
