I want to be able to scan documents using the printer's control panel, but it says I need to "enable scan to computer".
So I went to the HP site and downloaded the "full feature software" for this printer and installed it, but it's no help.
I've already got the printer connected via sharing from another computer on the network, but as soon as this software launches it wants to connect to the printer. So I have to select how I want to connect (wirelessly, wired, etc) but there's no option that says "I've already connected it", nor is there an option to connect via a share from another computer.
And besides, I've already connected it. I don't need help connecting the printer, I need to enable "scan to computer". Why is this so difficult?

I ended up solving this by doing the following:
- Remove the printer from both computers, using the Windows Settings app.
- Plug the printer into the router, rather than one of the computers, using a Cat 5 cable
- Add the printer using the HP software, rather than the Windows "Add printer" feature
Once the printer was added using the HP software, the HP software gave me all the control options, including "Scan to computer". If the printer is added using the Windows settings app, the HP software is useless.
The reason I had to do it this way is because the HP software, when adding the printer, does not give me the option to add the printer using a share from another computer, which is how I had connected to it in the first place. There are only three options for adding the printer using the HP software:
- Connect to the printer using wi-fi
- Connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable
- Connect the printer to the network router
It's missing two other valid connection options
- Connect the printer to the computer using a Cat 5 cable
- Connect to the printer through a share from another computer
It also is useless if you've connected your printer using the Windows settings app because the HP software then is unable to communicate with the printer for some reason, even though you can print to the printer just fine. In other words, the HP software sucks.

Hi,
Given you have installed printer software and drivers on your computer. Please try:
Double click printer icon on desktop,
Select Manage Scan to Computer
Click Enable -
You can start this automatically with Windows BUT you will get an arror message if you turn on the computer BEFORE the printer.
Regards.

"Select Manage Scan to Computer"
I wish it was that simple. When I double click th printer icon it asks me to connect a printer, but as I said, I've already connected it. There is no option to "Manage scan to computer".

Hi,
Very strange, please download an run the following tool:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/HPPSdr.exe
It may fix the problem for you. If not, post back full error message(s).
Regards.

The Print and Scan doctor is not helping either.
First it asks me to choose my product, and it does in fact show my printer listed as installed and I can select it. However when I click next and it attempts to communicate with my printer, it fails with the following error:
Failed to communicate with your selected product
