Officejet Pro 8620
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an Officejet Pro 8620 that suddenly quit printing and displays an error Cannot print. Connect printer to update HP instant Ink Status.

I press connect and it just sits there with the spinning circle saying Now Connecting... then after a minuter or two will say it's unable to connect to the server. The internet connection is fine, I've tried it with both wireless and hard wired with the same results. I've checked the date and time are correct, I've removed power and let it sit for 10 minutes, powered it back up with no success, I've removed web services and re-enabled them with no success. I've defaulted the printer to factory a billion times with no success. I'm ready to smash this thing in the parking lot and go buy and Epson if it doesn't start working.  No matter what I try it WILL NOT PRINT, it will make noise and shake the table like it wants to print then bam, stupid error about it can't connect to the internet. I press the little web services icon and it says checking registration status, aquiring email address and then displays the email address, says connected and HP ePrint and Apps are on but wont print via network or USB. And yes my ip address is correct, gateway is correct and DNS is correct.

Hello @Vegas89002, Greetings!

Thanks for engaging in the HP Forums! I see by your post that you are experiencing issues while connecting to instant ink. I will certainly do my best to help you.

I understand you have checked all the settings, disabled enabled the web services and also assigned correct DNS address. Try the steps below as well:

  • First, make sure the printer firmware is up to date. Go to http://hp.care/2enjufS to and install the firmware.
  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Now try connecting and check the instant ink status. If the issue still persists, login to your HP connected account and make sure your account is active. Go to http://hp.care/2eno9yA and click on sign in to enter your HP connected account.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Cheers 🙂

Thanks for the reply DVortex, I've already tried the google DNS and the firmware is current. I've gone through all the solutions posted in the forums before making my post and nothing has worked.

I'm not setup with Instant Ink so I don't know why it keeps trying to check with the hp server. I'm logged into my hp connected account it say's everything is good, green check marks on everything but it still wont print

Hello @Vegas89002,

Thank you for your reply.

It's strange that you do not have instant ink setup and still the printer is asking to "connect the printer to update HP instant Ink Status".

Please initiate a private message with your email address so that I can check you HP connected account. You can send me a private message by clicking my name and then selecting the private message option.

PS: Do not post your email address or any other sensitive date in the public post.

This posting did not say if you were able to resolve this issue or not.  I am having the same problem.  Yesterday I was printing documents just fine.  Then all of a sudden it stopped printing with the same issue metioned in this thread.  I tried everything:  factory default, uninstalling and reinstalling the software/drivers several times, checking system settings to make sure everything was enabled and running, unplugging/waiting/restarting, connecting by usb, you name it, even restoring to a previous time.  Still the same error messages displayed above.  One difference is that I do not want the instant ink program.  I was in it for 22 months and never went through an ink cartridge, so it was a waste of money.  It had been printing just fine with only the annoying instant ink message popping up which I would close and then it would print.  Then yesterday after printing about 30 pages the messages above started and I cannot get this resolved.  I tried the firmware update that is supposed to be for third party ink (although I have HP ink from Staples in it) and it will discover the printer on the second try, but I cannot put a check in the checkbox to update with that software.  The STATUS of that line says it is updated, but I dont know how that is possible if I cannot run that update.  Anyway, please help.  I spent all day yesterday trying to fix this with no luck.  Beginning to believe that HP is not the printer to go with.  Thank you for your assistance.

The ip address:

Does NOT work. I says that it is "unable to access the system at this time"

I entered this Instant Ink to program get a deal on ink. All this Instant Ink program has done is to make impossible to use my printer.

If this problem is not fixed I am not using HP products anymore. This is ridiculous. You people are so incompetent that you even understand how to get your reconnected to the internet.

I have no more patience. You had better deliver and provide me a solution now!
