Thanks for the details. I was able to identify which driver set to use.

I entirely rebuilt my Windows 7 system using the correct drivers. I then succesfully upgraded to Windows 10 and the scanner worked!

However, I noticed that the Device manager showed the device as being "not working" and after performing more work on the system it now fails again.

I have worked about 15 hours on rebuilding this system, this weekend.

NOT happy with HP.

I will have to revert back to Windows 7 again I think.

I have now found the problem (not an easy fix) .

As has happened for many years the installer has caused corruption in the install that the uninstaller cannot remove (Or print &scan doctor).

I have searched through the forum and elsewherein atempt to remove all traces but as has happened from very early HP printers the software seems to install to every part of the system and the more I tried the worse it became!

As I had upgraded and activated my win 10 I have done a clean install to a separate partion. Then run  AIO_CDB_Net_Full_Win_WW_140_408-5.exe which I found through another post in the forum (not the original update removed by HP as I believe that was corrupt and that was the cause of all these poblems) Very sorry but in the upgrade I managed to loose the full link to the driver. I believe it is an archive copy that HP missed.

The install went very smoothly on both my Lenovo and was also installed to my wifes samsung on to SSD.

The only upside to this is I now have a much faster machine and my wife does not have to wait an hour for her machine to boot!!  P.s. remember to back up everything I Thought I had But ***!*,* I haden't

It might be possible if you can work with registery to fix but I steer clear of that.

I realy do wonder why this has been happening for 20+ years is it in the core of the software that is being reused each time? Possibly the accountants will not let that part be rewriten.

I have come back to this topic as the time approaches that I should convert my systems to Windows 10, or lose the free update capability.

One of the systems would not convert to Windows 10, and Microsoft were unable to resolve it. So I performed a clean install of Windows 10.

At this point I knew the HP drivers would work with the HP Photosmart 3310 printer even if the scanner would not work. So I set about installing the software again. I used the version of the software distributed by HP for Windows 8. The name of the file I have is,

AIO_CDB_FSW_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe
but I cannot locate this anywhere now on the HP website.

The long and short of this, is that this worked for both the printer and scanner of the 3310 in Windows 10.
Clearly HP have not chnaged the software, as I had not downloaded a new version. So my conclusion was that Microsoft have changed something that allows the HP install process to work.

I went back to other systems and performed a complete uninstall of all HP software I could find. I deleted the HP directories in Program Files and Program Files (x86) that the HP uninstall program leaves behind.

I then rebooted and performed a full install using the above file.

So far this works on 2 other Windows 10 systems I have. Each was upgraded from Windows 7.
I am in progress on installing on a system upgraded from Windows 8.1. However the package is failing on this system. This surprises me as it has the same level of Windows 10 as the other three systems (OS Build 10586.420). The other main difference is that it is Windows 10 Home, whereas the other 3 are Windows 10 Professional.
I will persevere with this system.

As to the comments above from DaffyDuck, I am afraid these fail at the first hurdle, as the drivers are not available at the site he mentions. In addition if you go to that site, it has examples of what one should search for. The examples don't work either!

Bottom line: retry the installation with the later levels of Windows 10, but be sure to uninstall the old software.
