Good morning,

For the last week or so, My officejet pro 8600 has been giving me the error

"Cannot connect to \\REDACTED\Public\Scans. Make sure the remote computer is turned on."

It will correct itself if we restart the computer/printer  in question. but this only solves the issue for approx 6-7 hours.

Things i have done to attempt to fix this.

Set a static ip address for both the computer in question and the printer itself.

updated the IP address using the HP tool.

reinstalled the HP office program.

Set DMZ for both the computer and printer.

Set the public scans folder to zero security( so anyone connected to the network can gain unrestricted access)

re-setup the network feature on the printer itself.

however now i am at a loss.

Any help would be great.

Hi @Prophet1986,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand that you cannot connect in order to scan to your network folder with your HP Officejet 8600. I am sorry to hear this, but I am happy to help!

Are you able to make copies? Setting Up the Printer to Print and Copy from Tray 1 and Tray 2.

Are you connected wirelessly? Or with an Ethernet cable?

Also, what operating system are you using? Windows or Mac? What version? If you do not know the Operating System you are using, please visit this website. Whatsmyos.

In the meantime, please try the following:

Hope this information is helpful, and hope to hear from you soon! Smiley Happy

Good morning,

Thanks for Repling!

here are the answers to some of your questions

Are you able to make copies? Setting Up the Printer to Print and Copy from Tray 1 and Tray 2.

Yes, I can make copies from the touchpad on the printer and from the computer in question

Are you connected wirelessly? Or with an Ethernet cable?

I am connected wirelessly(both the computer and printer), however this issue does persist if i am connected with a ethernet cable.(again both connected with a cable)

Also, what operating system are you using? Windows or Mac? What version? If you do not know the Operating System you are using, please visit this website. Whatsmyos.

Windows 7 64-bit

In the meantime, please try the following:

The printer is not connected to a surge protector, however the computer is.

This has been done in the past.

The printer is allways connected to the wireless. (the modem is approx 5 feet away in the same room with no metal devices nearby)

I had the same problem.

Turn off

Wireless Direct Printing

from the Network menu on the printer's web page.

Once you turn that option off, the Scan to Network and Fax to Network should work. You cannot have Wireless Direct Printing on either with or without security. Won't work either way.

This feature was working jut fine and now it has stopped working!

When I scan to network folder using the touch screen on the printer I get the following message:

Cannot connect to: [File location]. Make sure the remote computer is turned on.

Well the remote computer is definitely ON!

How can I fix this??

Thank you!!!

Hi!

Where do I find the Network menu on the printer's web page?

Thank you!

Thank you, KenyaGraham...

I found where to turn off the Wireless Direct, and now I am getting:

"User name or password is incorrect.  Make sure the credentials are correct in the configuration.'

I don't use a password for the printer.

Getting closer...

Thanks!

A recent windows update disabled SMB v1 by default which many HP printers still use for scan file send. You will have to go to "Turn Windows features on or off" under "add or remove programs", and enable all three components of SMB v1 (make sure it's not a black box, but rather a checkmark) to get it to work on many printers. This will require a restart to take effect. See supported SMB by printer model at this HP link: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05547920

Do note, Microsoft has identified SMB v1 as a security vulnerability so you should only enable this if you want to take that risk to get the feature working again. It is not recommended to enable it.

OK checking the SMB parameters DID re enable Scan to network folder connectivity. However now I am a little leary of the exploit warning on this feature. HHHmmmm.anyone got any reassuring thoughts on the matter?? HP needs to provide a firmware upgrae for 8600's to utilize smbv2 or v3 and alleviate v1 as everybody else is doing!!

Peace
