Hello jegeorge

Have you followed the article 'The scanning device could not be initialized' and Related Scanning Error Messages Display on the Co...? It contains several possible solutions to resolve the error you are getting.

Also, you mention that you can scan to email and scan to the device, since Solution Center will not scan what program are you using to scan to a device?

Installing the latest firmware resolved the Windows 8 0-byte file issue for me.

Here are the instructions I followed: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-89897-5&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...

Hello SpongeWorthy

Glad to hear you got your problem resolved with a firmware update. I would like to ask if you have the Officejet 8500 A909 series or the Officejet 8500A A910 series? The reason is that both printers use different hardware and software and that firmware is designed for the 8500A A910 series whereas many in this thread have confirmed the are using the 8500 A909 series.

Anyone with the A909 series, do not try to install the firmware update linked above as it either will not install or if it does has a chance to break it. If you do have a A910 series printer the update should work as it did for SpongeWorthy.

Thanks Travis...Glad I didnt make that mistake!  Is there an update for A909 owners?

Hello jegeorge

First of all you're welcome. I wanted to make sure I posted that to make sure some mistakes were made.

Currently I do not see a Windows 8 firmware update (the last firmware update for the A909 series was 2010-04-28 with Windows 7). I have forwarded this information to a team for review and I will post back as soon as possible.

Travis_C,

You are correct, I have a OfficeJet Pro 8500A Premium A910 and not the model listed at the top of this thread.  Sorry for the confusion.

I hope HP produces a fix for the A909G for the rest of you.

Thanks

I've got the same problem,  all 5 computers updated to windows 8 x64 from a mix of previous operating systems.

All updated computers scan, and print from their OS just fine.

Network folder has been setup, saved and tested just fine, via the devices web page.

I am using home groups but no user name or password setup.

What doesn't work is the network folder button on the A909g printer....although as previously called out...it does seem like it's working (i.e.scanning and saving to network folder) but when you open the folder the document has been saved to the newly created file has a size of 0 bytes.

Help HP!

Travis asked me to pick up this thread for him.  I'm looking into whether a firmware update will be made available.  If I hear something, I'll let you know.

Same problem here. Can scan to memory device without problem, but scan to network creates files of size 0 bytes.

I'm still looking into whether a firmware update will be released to fix this or not.  It's looking more like not, but I'm still checking.  I'll let you all know if I find something.
