My experience with this was a complete joke:

1) "escalate" in this thread meant sending me to themaintenance sales department who told me they could repair the pc for $350.

2) When I asked questions on what I get for $350 (which seems a lot for a battery failure) they ignored my questions and offered me $150 off a new computer (which seems to be the real objective of HP).

3) So I called the HP online store to buy a new battery, they did not have one and didn'tknow when they would so gave me the name of 4  Canadian authorised parts suppliers, they had no interest in helping me further so the ball was back in my court.

4) I contacted all four suppliers to request the battery number quoted on mysystem parts list (there seem to be several numbers that refer toequivalent parts). Only 1 of the four suppliers even bothered to acknowledge my email request.

5) The one that did requested my model number and serial number as they couldn't find the battery. I sent them the details and then never heard from them again so I called several weeks later and they told me they couldn't find the battery or any substitute and there was basically nothing further theycould do.

6) I bought an after market battery on Amazon put it in and now I get the "Counterfeit Battery" every time I boot up.

7) While the machine now works again, exceptfor the irritation of the battery message on start up reminding me of HP's complete an utter indifference to me and all the others in this message thread and other similar threads, I still have an inconsistent space bar from getting bent during the battery swelling (hence allthe missing spaces throughout this rant) and the splits between the base and the keyboard from the broken clips and bent chassis (like the photo of another owner in theh thread.

There are many good things about the laptop but HP's lack of any type of care for their customers (like not admitting they have used defective batteries and replacing them like most other companies would do) leaves me not wanting to buy anything further from them again - although I doubt they would care about that either (starting with whether I get any sort of response from this message).

@MC4135, @mangles,@gojira351Welcome to the HP Support Community!

As this is a hardware issue, I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Have a great day!

When does this become a class action lawsuit, because clearly this is a flaw with the product that the company is well aware of.  Groups on Reddit and other forums have the same issue specifically with the Spectres built in 2018.

There needs to be a recall because people spent their money on an investment.  Computers are investments that are not meant to fall apart in less than a year.  Clearly the hardware issue started with the parts the company decided to use.

This also is not the first time HP has had issues with their batteries being recalled on other laptops.

This company needs to take action soon before it cost them more down the road.

People and loyal customers are pissed.

So my battery went just before Christmas (15-ch055), I didn't get it as bad as others because my back panel seems to fit back nicely. I searched and searched here in the UK for a replacement HP battery, of course with none in existence. So I have bought a 3rd party battery as I need this laptop for work, lo and behold, battery not detected by Windows. I update the bios and use their utility to detect the battery and get the message "non-genuine HP battery" so because I didn't buy from HP (which I would have done if they had any batteries for a barely 2 year old laptop!) I can't use the battery indicator, typical HP.

I've tried to contact HP though live chat etc but as soon as you supply the S/N you get cut off because it's out of warranty and no longer supported.

Thoroughly disappointed in HP, if anyone has any solution to getting a 3rd party battery working with these laptops I would greatly appreciate it.

I also had to use a 3rd party battery I found on Amazon. I do get the counterfeit battery warning at startup, but Windows does recognize the battery. I no longer get the estimated time to depletion or time to charge, but it does give me a percentage remaining. Did you do a full charge/discharge several times? That was included on my battery replacement. After installation you need to fully charge the battery with the laptop off, then let the laptop run until the battery is depleted to 10%, and repeat that a few times. Hope it helps.

Thanks for your advice, I'll give that a go. How did you know the battery is at 10% if it doesn't show the indicator?

HP Recommended

Yeah, good question. Mine did display the percentage from the get-go, so not sure what to tell you. I was hoping once you did the full charge/discharge cycle couple of times then Windows would pick up on it. Maybe there is some internal logic in the battery that determines this and feeds it to the system. My battery did have a warning with it that said to not discharge more than 10% otherwise it could eventually shorten the battery life, so that's why I said that. I actually just let mine discharge until Windows shut it down and it's been working well (aside from the counterfeit message every reboot and lack of estimated time remaining).

I wish HP would just stand behind their product better. Even supplying the battery for a nominal charge would help, but they are absent when it comes to providing solutions for this common problem.

"Contact HP" - very amusing. HP does not give out phone numbers or chat details if you have registered your product, and if that product is out of warranty. The only way you can get in touch with HP support is by 'tricking' the website into thinking that you are registering a new product.

I noticed the battery issue after my Spectre was just out of warranty by two months. I noticed because the back cover bulged out. I had actually performed a battery check before that time because the battery life had shortened. The battery check never identified any problem.

So I contacted HP Australia where I had bought the Spectre. They said that the battery problem was my fault because I hadn't kept the bios updated. I have always run every hardware and windows update as they became available. As I was outside of the country, they recommended I contact HP US. HP US said that my model was not for sale in the US, and that therefore they couldn't assist me or help me get a new battery. End of story.

So much for support from an international company for what has been touted as a high-end laptop. I will never, ever by a HP product again.

Hi! I have the same issue with the HP Spectre 360x battery. It affected both the spacebar and the touchpad, they barely work now.

I just started searching about this problem and found this thread so I figured I'd add my name to the list.

I have the same problem:  the bottom casing is separated on both sides.  I've also noticed the spacebar problem that others have noted, where it basically only works if the middle third of the spacebar is pressed.  I have a 15-ch011dx.

I'm not terribly concerned about the need to buy a third party battery, but I think it's pretty terrible if they're going to give me a counterfeit battery warning every time I boot when they don't sell a genuine replacement.

This computer is two and a half years old and I planned to use it for several more.  The battery lasts plenty long for my needs, so this is pretty disappointing that the computer is physically breaking itself apart when it still feels "new" to me. I already had to send it back to the factory once shortly after I bought it due to a speaker issue and now this.  I'll start shopping for replacement batteries I guess.
