C7280 VIA Wired/Ethernet>Linksys wrt54gs Desktop i7 Core 6GB RAM Vista HP 64bit Hardwired to router & Toshiba L305 Core2 Duo 3GB RAM Vista HP. Wireless
I just installed a C7280 with all the bloated SW. Now everthing works fine except when I boot the comps. they are very slow to connect to the network.
Anyone come across this issue?
Work-arounds?
Thanks in advance.

When you say the computers are slow to connect to the network, do you mean there is a delay before you can browse the internet? If so, how long is this delay?
Also, can the C7280 printer right after the computers boot up?
Finally, what kind of security SW (Zonealarm, Norton/Symantec, Trend Micro, Windows Firewall etc) are you running?

Hi Wi-Fi-Guy,
Thanks for the reply.
"When you say the computers are slow to connect to the network, do you mean there is a delay before you can browse the internet?"
Yes. More specifically to my home network (the router) and the internet.
The delay is between 75 and 90 seconds.
I Consider this to be slow as when I uninstall the HP Software the behaviour returns to normal. When I login to Windows (on my i7 Core Desktop comp) it takes about 5 seconds (sometimes even less) for the desktop and all the System tray notifications to fully load without the HP software installed.
Please note: When the HP software is installed the HP Digital Imaging Monitor loads about 3 seconds after the connection is established with the router/network.
When the system tray icon for the network connection loads (at start-up) it shows up with a RED X (at this point I start timing) untill the connection is established.
Another Note: Interesting that both computers take about the same time to establish a connection from when the red x appears.
"Also, can the C7280 printer right after the computers boot up?"
No. There is no connection with my network.
"Finally, what kind of security SW (Zonealarm, Norton/Symantec, Trend Micro, Windows Firewall etc) are you running?"
I am using Avast AV, and Windows Firewall. There is also a firewall (hardware) with the Linksys wrt54gs router.
Steps I have taken:
Disabled Digital Imaging Monitor from start-up = No fix
Uninstall HP Software components one at a time = No fix
Completely remove all componenets including the the AIO Driver = Instant connection, but no printer available (I can still ping and open the web based interface to the printer).
Installed ONLY the basic driver from HP's website = Insatant Connection, but, no bells and whistles.
Download and installed the Full Featured Software from HP's Website = Same issues
Steps I have taken with HP Support:
All the above steps
Performed L1, L2, and L3 uninstall and then reinstalled software, but, that provided no solution.
HP Support was trying to, of course, blame the issues on my computers, the router, and Micro$oft.
After some argumentive debate I was able to convince the "tech" that there is an issue with HP's Software component(s) and maybe even the driver that is included with the full featured software.
At this point the tech has elevated my problem to second level support with a case number.
I have yet to call back.
One other interesting note: I have a client with the same printer and running Windows XP Professional which also exhibits the same issue.
Thanks for looking into this.
I appreciate your time and efforts.

Sorry for the delay in replying. To be honest, I don't have a good answer. Here are a few things to try and a couple of more questions:
- You said that you XP system exhibited the same problem as your Vista machine. If you disconnect the Vista machine from your network, do you still exhibit the slow connection time on you XP machine?
- Is your XP machine running the same security SW as your Vista machine?
- Is the FW in the WRT54GS current? Are you running Linksys FW or some third party distributions (like DD-WRT or Tomato) for the wireless-router?
- I know your C7280 is connected via LAN cable to the WRT54GS. Are any of the computers connected wirelessly to the router?
- Is the WRT54GS DHCP server enabled or are you running static IP addresses for your networked devices? Can I ask what are the IP addresses assigned to printer and computers on your network?
- I think the WRT54GS has a UPnP feature. Try disabling it.
- Are you using a different DNS than your the one assigned by your ISP (e.g.. OpenDNS)?
- Are there any other networking applications running on your computers?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes current. Not third party
4. Yes, the laptop Toshiba Vista HP 3GB Ram
5. DHCP is enabled IP addresses have no conflicts.
6. I did disable UPnP feature and this caused the printer not to be found.
7. No.
8. No
I was on the phone with HP support yesterday and was told there is no solution. End of help by HP support.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help Wi-Fi-Guy, I appreciate your efforts.

Thanks DexterM.
This seems to have worked.
Once after returning from Sleep the Digital Imaging Monitor shut down with an error but I failed to write it down and have since forgotten what it mentioned.
I will keep my eye on it and see if it returns, so far so good.
I take it that the 'HP CUE Device Discovery Service" is to, well, discover new (HP?) devices?
WiFi Guy.
My apologies.
I should have tested for actual connections to the internet. It seems I was able to connect even with the red x.
