I purchased an HP 9125e in October and it has been trouble ever since. I keep reading of all these problems others owners have with this model and all I ever read as a solution is basically reboot the printer.  Can anyone tell us how to prevent the problem from reoccurring???  My main issue right now is that my printer will not power off.  Under Settings/Energy, Sleep is set to 15 minutes, Auto Shutdown is off, and Schedule printer On/Off is not set.  I have a Windows 11 PC.

This printer is SO disappointing since I have had at least other 2 HP printers and they have been amazing...no problems whatsoever!!!!!

I need you to explain what the problem is.  There is some misunderstanding here as I do not see a problem with the printer not turning off.  I assume is sleeps after 15 minutes and does not turn off.

The power light and the WiFi lights are on, the screen is black, and it won't print.  I hold down the power button and nothing happens....it won't come back on and it won't power off.  I unplugged the printer, held down the power button for 15 seconds (like they always tell you to do the 'power drain'), waited 30 seconds, plugged the printer back in and the printer powered on and printed my document.  This is a fix to the problem but not a solution or answer as to what is causing it and what I can do to prevent this.  It has happened several times to me and other HP 9125e owners.

I assume you do not have a flex system with boosters or repeaters:    If you ever add boosters or wi-fi repeaters the printer may randomly connect to one then to another the next day or hour or even minute. If so, the router needs to a fixed IP address rather than the booster or repeater providing it's own random IP address.

I suspect your printer wakes up from sleep and has the wrong IP address.  Powering the printer off and seems to fix the problem.  The 9125 can run at 2.4 and 5ghz.  If the router has the same SSID for each band it is likely that printer will pick at random the 2.4 band one minute and the 5ghz the next time it wakes up from sleep.  It probably gets a different IP address and the PC cannot connect as it has the wrong IP address.  Eventually it gets the correct IP address and the job will finish printing.

Watch the reset video. After resetting, you generally have 2 hours to complete the setup. Decide if you want to connect the printer to the router or to print directly to the printer and bypass the router.

Many HP and other OEM printers have problems with the router when the router has two bands and both bands have the same name (SSID). Log into the modem and rename one of the bands. Alternately, contact your ISP and have them rename a band.

Or simply use Wi-Fi direct.

If English is not your native language or if you wish to get additional information not covered below, then use the HP and Microsoft support assistants. The latest HPSA supports 36 languages and can be downloaded here. Microsoft's AI assistant is in the latest Windows 10 and 11 releases and there are instructions here on how to enable the AI. Microsoft's AI assistant (Copilot) has a microphone button and supports natural language processing.

You may need to reset your printer.

Disconnecting the USB cable may still leave the printer in the wired or Wi-Fi mode. Connecting an ethernet cable may still leave the printer in Wi-Fi mode. The Wi-Fi reset is used to put Wi-Fi printers into setup mode. Some printers have a semi-reset, a full reset and a factory reset. Please refer to the user manual to find the difference. Some resets are simple and others require a video to understand. Factory resets cannot be revealed in this forum. To do a factory reset of your printer, you must contact HP.

Wi-Fi reset instructions and videos (if any) are shown below. Generally you have 2 hours to connect your printer after performing the Wi-Fi reset. Note that a reset video may show a slightly different model than yours.

Microsoft's Copilot may have more recent videos.

Wi-Fi connection

Ideally, your Wi-Fi printer should connect to the modem or router. If your network has multiple boosters / repeaters, it is possible the printer may connect randomly to any of the units. The router needs to provide the same IP address on every connection. This rarely happens with random connects. An alternate Wi-Fi connection is Wi-Fi direct. Your laptop or smartphone prints directly to the printer and does not go through the router.

This video shows how to connect to the router: 9125
Wi-Fi Direct can be used to avoid configuring the router. Watch this: 9020e
Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 103 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the router.

Software

HP updates software periodically. Downloads shown below may be old. You should always visit the Software and Download page to look for new releases. You may need to select an operating system (OS) first. If windows 11 is missing then use 10. You can go as far back as Windows 7, 64bit to get missing drivers. After selecting the OS click the blue Open all button to view all downloads.

Full function printer drivers can be downloaded here: 9130-9135 9120-9125
Full function software for scanning can be downloaded here: Universal Scan Aug 2024

Documents

All documents are available at the below HP site. The user and reference manuals show how to get status reports and analyze error indicators on printer that have no control panel.

All HP manuals are here: 9120 series

Support Videos - Parts - Disassembly

HP has a YouTube site and there are a number of video in English and other languages. Typically unboxing, clearing paper jams, and cartridge problems. You may also find instructional disassembly videos from other users.

Printer problems could be cleared by one or more of these HP YouTube videos 9100 series

Printer Reference

One or more printer reference is listed below. Typically your printer may be part of a series and use the same software and manual. The exact spec may be different.

Specifications for your system: 9125 9130 9120 9020e

For Linux OS look for the HOPLIP distribution

Let me know if you have a flex system (Wi-Fi boosters or repeaters) as the setup is much more complicated for routers.

if you continue to have problem try disabling sleep on the printer.  if there are walls blocking the Wi-Fi signal to the router  you might want to look at using powerline adapters or using a repeater..

 Powerline adapters are explained here
Typical power line adapters are here

Your reply was amazing, so much information, and 90% of it over my head.  It will take me a while to digest all this and try to decide what to do and interpret what you said.  But 1/4/25 my printer froze again.  The Power Light and WiFi light were on, the screen was blank, and the printer would not power off/shut down.  I looked at Settings and it was flagged as offline.

I tried something different, unplugging the printer from the power strip, got an extension cord, and plugged it directly into the wall as HP suggests.  The printer powered back up immediately.  I pressed the power button to shut it off and the screen said 'Shutting down'.  But after a couple minutes it just powered on again.  Once it came back up I pressed the power button again, the screen said 'Shutting Down' and this time the printer truly did shut off.

But then 1/5/25, the printer never froze and I was able to shut it down normally.  I think the printer is just defective and crap but HP would never replace it.  Thank you so much for your help!!!!!  I will let you know if I ever perform any of the fixes you suggested.

Thank you for your recent reply about the link for 'Control panel blank, unresponsive' but the article is just ridiculous!!!!  That is the standard HP answer they give their customers for whatever error that occurs with their printer....restart or check for a firmware update.  Why can't they give a reply of what is actually wrong and what is causing the issue and supply a permanent fix???  By the way, my firmware is updated!!!

Just today I powered on my printer and printed a document.  I got the message that it was offline initially but then the document printed.  But when I attempted to print a second document nothing happened.  I ran the troubleshooter and then didn't even fix it.  There was a document in the queue but it said my printer was offline.  The printer froze yet again. I couldn't even power it off.  i unplugged the printer, plugged it back in, the printer came back up and eventually printed my document.  RIDICULOUS!!!!!

That firmware came out on December 13, 2024.  Did you have the problem before Dec 13 ?

If not, then possibly the problem is the firmware and you need to downgrade to the previous version.  If you have had the problem for some time then possibly the printer or the router has a problem.

Your printer handles USB and ethernet in addition to Wi-Fi.

Connect using USB to eliminate the router as the problem.

If the problem goes away then try hard wired ethernet.

let me know what you find out.

Hey Beemer!!!!!  Thanks again for all your replies and support!!!!  I haven't had the nerve yet to attempt any of your suggestions from your first email (most of which was over my head anyway).  Yesterday was a good day with no errors and the printer shut down successfully.  Today was a different story, with the printer receiving 3 Critical Errors, F0.01.04.07.  I went into HP Smart is see about updating my Firmware (even tho the Control Panel says it is up to date with Version 6.23.2.13 - 202411250708).  Critical Error 010925.JPGPrinter Error 112224.JPG.  But as you stated the current version has a release date of Dec. 13, 2024 but it is the same version number as mine....weird!!!!  I attempted to do a download and install but it hung!!!  (Attached is one of my Critical Errors received today and one received November 22, 2024).

There is a discussion of the F0.01.04.07  here by Google and a video that Google's AI found.

Do not call any of the phone numbers shown by BIng or Google or embedded in any video.

Those errors are system errors and you may need to have your printer serviced
