Hi @rickbeck007
Let's first see if the issue has to do with your wireless network. The 8600 has a feature called Wireless Direct. I'd like to enable to Wireless Direct and put the Mac on the printers network. With the mac on the printers network, simply try scanning again. If you still can not scan we will know the issue is not likely your network, if however you can scan, the issue is your network and not related to HP.
To enable and use the Wireless Direct feature, touch the little arrow on the right hand side of the touch screen, then choose Setup. In the Setup menu, navigate to and choose Network, then select Wireless Direct. SInce we are only using this for diagnostic purposes, I suggest turning it on without security, then you can add the Mac to the network the printer is broadcasting.
Open the following link to learn more about Wireless Direct.

Thanks! Although the positions on your instructions are a little different, by doing what you suggested, I got my HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw color MFP to scan using OS X 10.10.2!!!!! The windows for scanning preferences all looked different than with Snow Leopard, but it did the job! It did seem to take a little longer to get the scan to print than before, but it worked great otherwise.http://siteintercept.qualtrics.com/WRQualtricsShared/Graphics//siteintercept/popup_shadow_transparen...

You're welcome. It's great that we can all support each other -- now if only Apple will pay attention....
and by the way, Apple tekkies if you are reading this -- please bring labels back instead of tags in Mavericks!

I have an HP OJP 8600. I wish I could use wireless direct. I tried it once. The radio is weak and unreliable. With the HP Utility installed on a MacBookPro 15 with Retina the H Utility sends out hundreds of "SYN/ACK" messages over the wireless interface to my MAC. The messages typically include all of the details of the HP OJP 8600 filling buffer and buffer of needless data that slows down my network.
With ethernet at least everyone in my home can access the device and could scan, without all of the advertised functions and features, until the upgrade to Yosemite. I find it odd that HP claims the HP Scan 3.app Version 4.4.1, released on 10/29/2013 is the solution for Yosemite which wasn't even releaed at the time.
I was going to give the printer away to my daughter's private school. They don't want it. It appears brand new. With 2,500 pages printed. But the school did the research and they decided they don't have the time for constantly attending to the problems and required upgrades.
Shame HP couldn't get their software working. I am going power off the computer and put up the new Epson with hopes of things take a turn for the best.

The example given on the page looks like this: \\user\sharedfolder
I don't know exactly what this refers to on a network. Can anyone who knows what I'm talking about please lend me their help/support?
Thank you so much in advance

This worked for me after upgrading to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, so maybe it will also work for Yosemite. It's a workaround that Apple tech support walked me through:
Go to Systems Prefs
Printers & Scanners
Choose Scan from Print/Scan above the printer name
Open Scanner
In the dialogue box that pops up:
Make sure “scan to” says Desktop
Hit Scan.
If the dialogue box doesn’t open up immediately, be patient.
