Have an error with my Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. Error message is "General Printer Error". No error code. Printer screen suggests to turn power off and on and if that does not help to contact HP. Using non-HP printer cartridges. Have run HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.2 without resolving the issue. It checks out the printer's components as ok. Have checked for obvious things such as paper jams etc. Any ideas?

@Hans21, Welcome to HP Support Community!
In some cases, a printer reset can clear the error message.
- Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
- Re-install the ink cartridges and see if the error message re-appears
If the issue persists, follow steps 5 to 10 from this document.
Let me know the outcome.
Cheers 🙂

Hi, thanks a lot for your assistance. After many itterations of your solution the General Printer Error message disappeared to be replaced with the printer not recognising the black cartridge. Purchased a new HP black cartridge but after many attempts could not get the printer to recognise the new cartridge. Ended up replacing the printer with a HP Officejet Pro 8710. Unfortunately not the same cartridges as the 8600. Is there any hope of resurrecting the 8600 as can give it to a friend if I can get it to work.
